Chainsaw Work and Heavy Growth Removal in Norfolk: When to Call a Professional

When the Loppers Just Won't Cut It

Some garden jobs are simply beyond what a pair of loppers or a hand saw can handle. A thick ivy stem wrapped around a fence post. A fallen branch pinning down your shed roof after a storm. A boundary hedge that has been left for years and is now a wall of woody growth two metres thick. These are the jobs where chainsaw work makes the difference between a task that takes hours of frustrating hacking and one that gets done cleanly and efficiently.

We cover the whole of Norfolk and Suffolk for exactly this kind of work. Whether you're in Norwich, out near Bungay in Suffolk, or somewhere along the north Norfolk coast near Holt, we come to you, get stuck in and leave the place tidy.

What We Mean by Chainsaw Work

It is worth being clear about what falls under this heading, because people use the term in different ways.

Our chainsaw work includes:

  • Cutting back heavy overgrowth, woody shrubs, large bramble crowns, thick-stemmed ivy and similar growth that has built up over years
  • Dealing with fallen or storm-damaged branches, cutting them down to manageable lengths so they can be removed or stacked
  • Reducing large shrubs and overgrown hedgerows, where hand tools are not practical for the volume or thickness of material
  • Cutting timber to size, logs, old fence posts, large branches that need sectioning before they can be loaded and taken away
  • Clearing heavily overgrown land, paddocks, field edges, rural plots and neglected gardens where the growth has become structural rather than just leafy

This is not tree surgery or tree felling. We do not climb trees or carry out aerial work. What we do is the ground-level chainsaw work that makes a real difference to overgrown, neglected or storm-affected properties across Norfolk and Suffolk.

The Kind of Jobs We Get Called Out For

Most of the chainsaw work we do across Norfolk and Suffolk falls into a handful of recognisable situations.

Storm damage is a big one. Norfolk's flat, open landscape means that when the wind gets up, it really gets up. A single storm can bring down heavy limbs onto fences, paths or lawns. Getting those sections cut down to size and loaded into the van is exactly the sort of job that needs doing quickly, before the damage gets worse or access to the garden is blocked.

Overgrown boundaries are another common call. Hedges and shrubs that have not been touched in years develop thick woody cores that cannot be cut with standard hedge trimmers. We use the chainsaw to get back into that bulk, reduce the overall size and then tidy up with other tools. If you have a property near somewhere like Wroxham or Dereham where the garden has been left to its own devices for a season or two, this is the kind of work that gets things back under control.

Neglected rural plots come up regularly too. Paddocks, smallholdings and large gardens in the more rural parts of Norfolk and Suffolk often have boundary growth, fallen timber or old tree stumps surrounded by scrub that needs clearing before the land can be used properly again. Chainsaw work is often the starting point before we move on to grass cutting or landscaping.

Clearance before a sale or tenancy is something we handle more and more. Landlords and homeowners preparing a property for sale sometimes inherit years of neglected growth in the garden. Getting the heavy stuff cut back and taken away can completely change the first impression a buyer or new tenant gets.

What Happens to the Cuttings

Everything we cut is loaded into the van and taken away. You do not end up with a pile of branches on the lawn or a heap of logs blocking the drive. On a recent hedge job we filled two and a half van loads with cuttings alone, so we know how to handle volume. Chainsaw work generates a lot of material quickly, and clearing it properly is part of the job.

Chainsaw Work and Garden Clearance: Often the Same Job

Quite often the chainsaw work is just the first stage of a bigger clearance. Once the heavy growth is cut and loaded, there is usually a follow-up with loppers, a hedge trimmer and a rake to get the finer material. Sometimes that leads into a full garden clearance, a reshaping of beds and borders, or new fencing once the old overgrowth has been removed.

If you are dealing with an overgrown plot, it is worth reading our article on Overgrown Garden Solutions: How to Reclaim a Neglected Plot in Norwich, which covers the wider process of getting a neglected garden back under control. And if storm damage has also taken out fencing, our piece on Fence Repair and Replacement in Norwich: When to Fix, When to Replace is worth a look too.

A Word About Wildlife and Heavy Cutting

If the chainsaw work involves cutting back large hedges or scrubby boundary growth, it is always worth checking for active bird nests first, particularly between March and August. We take a responsible approach to this. Heavy cutting is best avoided during the main nesting season where possible, and we always have a look before we start. If you are unsure about timing, just mention it when you get in touch and we will talk it through.

Working Across Norfolk and Suffolk

We are based just north of Norwich and cover the whole of Norfolk and Suffolk. That means we regularly work in:

  • Norwich and the surrounding villages
  • North Norfolk towns like Aylsham, Holt and Cromer
  • The Broads area around Wroxham and beyond
  • Mid-Norfolk including Dereham and Fakenham
  • The south of the county around Attleborough, Diss and Thetford
  • Across the border into Suffolk, including Bungay, Halesworth, Beccles and Ipswich

Distance is not a barrier. If you have a job that needs doing, get in touch and we will let you know if we can reach you.

What Our Customers Say

We let the work speak for itself, but this review from Mike sums up the approach well:

Sam worked miracles on our garden. He not only transformed our garden, but took away all of the cuttings, weeds and branches that were left over. Our garden looks completely different once Sam has finished. It's also amazing how much he gets done within the time. Sam is incredibly friendly and obviously loves gardening. I can recommend Sam in the highest terms!

Mike Cunningham

The taking away of cuttings and branches is something we always do. It is not an optional extra. The job is not finished until the garden is clear.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you do chainsaw work throughout Norfolk and Suffolk, or just near Norwich?

We cover the whole of both counties. We are based just north of Norwich, which gives us a good central starting point, but we travel regularly to north Norfolk, the coast, the Broads, south Norfolk and across into Suffolk. If you are in Lowestoft, Bury St Edmunds or anywhere in between, get in touch and we will confirm availability.

Can you deal with a large fallen branch after a storm?

Yes, this is one of the most common calls we get. We can come out, cut the branch into sections, clear everything away in the van and leave the garden safe and tidy. If the storm has also damaged fencing, we can look at that in the same visit.

I have a very overgrown garden with thick woody shrubs. Is that chainsaw work or something else?

It depends on the size and thickness of the material. For very heavy, woody growth, the chainsaw is often the most practical starting point. We will assess what is needed when we see the job and use the right tools for the task. Often it is a combination of chainsaw work, loppers and a hedge trimmer to get the best result.

Do you take the cut material away?

Always. Everything we cut is loaded into the van and taken away. You will not be left with a pile of timber or a heap of branches to deal with yourself.
